Manuel Tolegian (1911-1983) painting on fiber board of a handsome middle aged woman. Manuel Tolegian was a childhood friend of author William Saroyan, and like him grew up in Fresno, California. Along with painting, Tolegian was a musician, and wrote the music for Saroyan's Pulitzer Prize winning play, "Time of Your Life." After serving as a combat medic in WWII, Tolegian became known as an illustrator, and then as a painter, focusing on scenes in California's Central Valley that reflected the reality of life there.This painting is unusual, being a portrait, where Tolegian was best known for his landscapes.
