A polychrome carved wood frog sculpture made by Mexican artist Manuel Jimenez Ramirez (Mexican, 1919-2005). It is signed on the frog's belly.Manuel Jimenez Ramirez was a renowned Mexican carver, painter, and sculptor accredited for the origination of the Oaxacan "alebrijes," which are brightly colored Mexican folk art carvings of animal-like spirit creatures, often sold to tourists throughout Mexico and Mexican markets. Ramirez began making animal sculptures from clay when he was eight-years old, but eventually transitioned to wood. Similar to alebrijes' design, his work is often creatures composed from different animals' bodies inspired by the ancient beliefs of his culture, with intricate details and real hair to give them greater realism. His work is a part of private and permanent collections around the world.Dimensions: 4 x 10 x 3.5 inchesThis lot may be picked up free of charge from our facilities in Sacramento, CA.
