A framed and matted photograph of the USS Onondaga docked at Halifax, N.S.. The ship was commissioned in 1864 for the Union Navy during the American Civil War and spent most of its entire active career with the James River Flotilla covering the water approaches to the Confederate States capital of Richmond, Virginia. In 1867, the ship was purchased by the French to serve primarily as a coastal defense ship until it was scrapped in 1905. The caption of the photograph reads, "she was the 'Dunderberg' a yankee Captn Devarenne."
