Kriegsmarine (Navy) Second Type "Schnellboot-Kriegsabzeichen (S-Boat Badge); Made by Alfred Stubbe (their mark "AS" appears in the center on the reverse) The badge has the small loop hook at the top of the reverse, which prevented the top of the badge from tipping forward away from the pocket. It has the horizontal pin style with a slim, flat-topped pin that flares nicely at the waist (center) before tapering to a point. The pin fits securely within the catch. The badge has a decent weight of 35 grams The Germans called this type of vessel an "S-Boot" from "Schnellboot" ("Fast Boat"). The badge was manufactured in two distinct patterns, the first seeing use from 30 May 1941 until January 1943. Both were designed by the respected firm of Wilhelm Peckhaus of Berlin. Includes a certificate of authenticity from Bill Shea of the Ruptured duck, a highly respected 3rd reich dealer. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S $30 plus a 1.5% insurance fee.
This example is a textbook piece with the gilt finish on the fairly broad and relatively flat relief oak leaf wreath showing some moderate toning for an overall dusky hue. Silver wash on s-boat has wear on high points. The reverse retains nearly 100% of its extremely dark silver oxide (practically black) finish.
