Kiyoshi Saito was born in Fukushima Prefecture in 1907 and became one of the leading figures of Japan's sosaku-hanga (creative print) movement. He original trained in Western-style oil painting, but later turned to woodblock printing in the 1930s. Saito's work combined Japanese subjects and traditions with modernist simplification and abstraction. He was particularly celebrated for his landscapes, architecture, and scenes of the Aizu region and popular among collectors during the postwar period until his death in 1997.
