Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760–1849), Selected Views from Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, Japanese Accordion-Fold Album, Early 20th Century
Accordion-fold album containing twelve reproductions after Katsushika Hokusai’s celebrated Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku Sanjūrokkei), housed in patterned silk-covered boards. The album includes some of the master’s most iconic compositions, among them views of Nihonbashi, Ryōgoku Bridge, Honganji Temple at Asakusa, Mishima Pass, Ushibori, and the famed barrel-maker scene from Owari Province. Originally issued as a compact presentation album, the work reflects the enduring popularity of Hokusai’s landmark series, first published between 1830 and 1833 and widely regarded as one of the most influential achievements of Japanese ukiyo-e art.
The present example is believed to date from the Taishō to early Shōwa period and was preserved in the Trik Archive, with family history indicating acquisition in Japan or the Pacific region prior to the owner’s death in 1954. The album retains its original silk-covered binding and presents as a complete twelve-view selection, representative of the finely produced Japanese gift and collector albums popular during the early twentieth century.
