A framed charcoal drawing titled The Naked Man by Joseph Hirsch, signed in the upper right corner.Joseph Hirsch was born 1910 in Philadelphia, PA. He began his formal art training at 17-years old after winning a four-year scholarship from the city to attend the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art. In the 1930s, Hirsch's art was boosted to nationwide audiences when it was featured on Works Progress Administration advertisements. Later during WWII he transitioned to making illustrations for the war effort, famously designing the war bonds Till We Meet Again poster. Following the war, Hirsch continued painting and teaching, becoming widely recognized for his social commentaries on civic corruption & racial injustice until his death in 1981.A color oil on canvas version of this image hangs in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. According to their website: "Joseph Hirsch's painting captures a rite of passage familiar to young American men during the years of the cold war. The Naked Man shows a tall, youthful figure in a dark hallway, carrying a pile of clothing, dog tags, and boots that signal he has just been drafted into military service. His pale bare skin against the dark background emphasizes the vulnerability of a young man who has been stripped of his identity. At his feet, arrows emerge from the darkness, marking the path that he and other draftees are to follow as they are transformed from civilians to soldiers."We cannot confirm whether this drawing was made before, during, or after his process for the famous painting.
