A scarce nickel-plated steel “Portable Safe” issued by Citizens Bank, Roseville, CA, manufactured by the Automatic Recording Safe Co., Chicago. The front carries the engraved plate: CITIZENS BANK / 136 / ROSEVILLE, CALIFORNIA. The base reads: THE PORTABLE SAFE / PATENTS PENDING / AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE CO. / CHICAGO, U.S.A. Features include a top coin slot, original fold-down handle, and keyhole for coin retrieval (key not present). Promotional banks of this type were distributed by banks in the early 20th century to encourage regular deposits—customers would return the locked bank to the institution for opening and crediting of savings.
