Photograph on copper plate, giving the effect of an orotone. Though orotones are usually on glass plate. Image backed with red fiber board. Shows a Native American man identified in the image as Culus George. From the studio of Lee Moorhouse, a notable photographer of Native American life in the Pacific Northwest. The text "tomahawk that Dr. Whitman was murdered with" inscribed on the image refers to the Whitman Massacre of 1847. American missionaries Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, along with eleven others, were killed by a small group of Cayuse men who suspected that Whitman had poisoned their people during a measles outbreak. The massacre was a major factor in Congress establishing the Oregon Territory the next year in 1848, to protect the White settlers.
