Collection of original manuscript pages from an American student's cyphering book attributed to Basil Davis (initialed B.D. on one page). Penned in iron-gall ink on laid paper. Several pages bear the signature of 'Thomas S. Davis,' with a contemporary note applied to the frame verso identifying the manuscript as "Basil Davis, HIs Cyphering Book."
One page has a cyphering problem which reads,
"Divide 48692 pounds of tobacco between and Overseer and 14 slaves in such manner that the Overseer may have (1 1/2?) share and each slave an equal share"
Three pages completely full of writing front and back on each.
