Coiled braided rawhide lariat (lasso) of traditional Western ranching form, constructed from tightly braided natural hide strands with a formed honda (eye) at one end. The rope exhibits a consistent round braid and tapered working end, characteristic of utilitarian cowboy gear used in roping and livestock handling.

The surface shows a well-developed patina with mottled coloration from age, use, and environmental exposure. The construction and wear suggest practical field use rather than later decorative manufacture.

Lariats of this type were essential tools of the American West, employed for catching and controlling livestock. Unlike whips, which were used primarily to create sound to guide animals, ropes such as this were integral to hands-on ranch work.

A representative example of working Western material culture, suitable for display or collection of ranching and cowboy equipment.

Condition

Overall condition is fair to good, used. The rope retains its original form and appears complete, though it exhibits significant dryness and stiffness throughout. There is visible surface wear including cracking, abrasion, and minor losses to the outer fibers, particularly along bends and high-stress areas. The honda (loop) remains intact but shows wear consistent with use. Color variation and patina are consistent with age and prolonged handling. No major breaks are observed, though flexibility is reduced. The rope is best considered a display or collection piece rather than suitable for modern use.
