Exceptionally fine and original German pre-WWI military Stein to Franz Winkler of the 4th Royal Bavarian Railway Battalion from 1907- 1909. This is a particularly fine stein, with gold paint on two roped borders around the body of the stein, and many hand-painted details. The back of the stein has a list of the last names of men in the Battalion at the time. The decoration on the front includes a soldier waving his feltmutze, their barracks, a train on a barge crossing a river, a railway bridge under construction, a trin crossing a wooden railway bridge, a group of soldiers clustered around a bar maid receiving steins, and a particularly fine painting of a locomotive with the Railway Troops' shoulder tab in front of it. The lid of the stein shows minor darkening on the exterior, but is bright on the ind=side. There is a locomotive on the top of the lid, and the top of the handle is crowned with a winged railroad wheel. The handle is smooth on the inside. There are mottoes in German on the sides of the lid. There is no lithopane in the bottom. The side of the stein near the handle is marked "1/2 L." The bottom of the stein is stamped 22 over 992, and there is a maker's stamp by the numbers resembling a square with a cross in it, topped by a tree or a leaf. Size: 11 inches tall. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $40.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance. Discounts given on combined lot shipping.

Condition

Excellent plus condition, with gold paint on two roped bands. There is a tiny ding on the bottom rim of the stein. The paint is excellent. The lid is patinated on the outside, but bright on the inside.
