Framed 19th century lithograph, "The Mammoth Trees of California". Engraved by G. K. Stillman and printed by the Times Steam Job Color Press of Cincinnati, Ohio. The picture presents a view of one of the groves of the famous Sequoia Gigantea (Redwoods) surrounding a cabin. These trees are unique in that they only grow on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada, and then only in groves. They can live for thousands of years. The North Grove of Calaveras was "discovered" in 1852 by Augustus T. Dowd.
Each large tree is named and given a letter designation beneath its image. Trees represented include "The Father of the Forest," "The Mother of the Forest," "The Three Graces," "The Big Tree," "The Miner's Cabin," "Uncle Tom's Cabin," "The Horseback Ride," and "The Two Guardsmen or Sentinels." Each tree features a short description including its circumference and height. People are shown to give the trees perspective.
