An evangelical account of the famed dancer, actress, and courtesan Lola Montez (1821–1861), recounting her repentance and final years.
Published by the Protestant Episcopal Society for the Promotion of Evangelical Knowledge, New York. Green cloth boards with gilt title and border, black rule lines, 83 pages. Printed by John A. Gray & Green, New York.
Born in Ireland and celebrated across Europe for her beauty and scandalous liaisons, Montez arrived in California in 1853 during the Gold Rush, performing in San Francisco and Nevada City. She became a colorful figure in Gold Country history, famous for her “Spider Dance†and for keeping a pet bear. Her later years saw a turn to religious reflection, culminating in this moralizing narrative of her life.
